Sentimental, unapologetic show comes 30 years after her first MSG performance For her most recent tour, which featured the live debut of the hit single featuring Nicki Minaj, Madonna chose a Japanese samurai theme for the staging of the song. With her female dancers and a kimono costume, the pop icon starts with simple choreography to the tune that intensifies with the film's hypnotic editing. As the song builds, she begins stage-fighting her male dancers for a video-game-esque treatment of the Diplo-produced EDM-trap anthem. Minaj even makes a brief appearance via video during a portion of her verse. Madonna: Rebel Heart Tour is the latest Showtime music doc, following films from a wide range of artists including the Rolling Stones, One Direction and Lenny Kravitz. Premiering Friday at 9 p.m. ET/PT, it will highlight the career-spanning set list of her most recent tour, which ended in March. After Amy Schumer's opening set, the seasoned musician staged an orgy above a Last Supper table, fronted fan and flamenco dance numbers and debuted new spins on classics like 'Material Girl.' 'I'm feeling very nostalgic — do you people understand that I played Madison Square Garden thirty years ago?' Madonna told those on her Rebel Heart Tour during her first of two nights at the storied venue. 'I'm so lucky to have survived this long and I couldn't have done it without all of you. I want to acknowledge the support and love you've given me for over three decades.' Madonna News Rebel Heart Tour DVD Tears of a Clown. MadonnaTribe has heard some great news about the release of Madonna’s acclaimed Rebel Heart Tour on home video! Here’s what we know so far: When: The Rebel Heart. ![]() And she did just that, showcasing her years of creative vision and onstage expertise to deliver an arena show packed with visual variety, thematic theatrics and inventive instrumentation to refresh even her earliest hits. A half-tempo version of 'Material Girl' while tossing male dancers down a sloped LCD screen? Or a full-on flamenco rendition of 'La Isla Bonita' complete with stomps, claps and shouts? What about 'Burning Up' with the headliner shredding hard on an electric guitar? Madonna's Rebel Heart Tour was nothing short of a spectacle that left even the most repeated ticketholder of the singer surprised and fulfilled. Read more With Jennifer Lopez, Ariana Grande and Amy Schumer in the audience (fresh off her opening set and ready to jump onstage with Madonna during 'Unapologetic Bitch') — amid lifelong fans donning lace, leather and even 'Living for Love'-like bull horns — the two-hour show set her Rebel Heart tracks in various worlds, first introducing audiences to an Asian-inspired regime for the 'revolution' of the album's track, 'Iconic.' Emerging from a descending iron cage, Madonna donned an ornate kimono-like robe with wide sequin-lined sleeves, and soon led a graceful dance interlude with oversized red fans and martial arts moves. She later opted for bolero vests, lace corsets and floral dresses for a Spain-inspired section, complete with choreography that saw her as a matador with a silk red muleta and a moment to share few audience greetings in Spanish. To spotlight her latest album, Madonna went aggressively for the religiously irreverent, as she gyrated alongside pole-dancing, scantily-clad nuns, staged an orgy atop a Last Supper table and straddled a priest in the middle of the cross-like stage. And at one point, the venue became a roaring jazz club, with cigars, fringe, a tabletop tap dance interlude, a filming bar fight and a female Charlie Chaplin, plus a performance of 'La Vie En Rose' in French. The show's most successful section was a fun and flirty Southern setup, with Madonna wearing jeans and a sweet gingham shirt and trading in her smolder for a smile. First rolling around atop a car (and some men) for Rebel Heart's 'Body Shop,' the singer strummed a ukulele from atop a pile of tires for a heartwarming 'True Blue' and added some line dancing and piggy back rides to a well-received 'Deeper and Deeper.' 'Like my grandma always says, if it's got tits or tires, it's gonna give you trouble,' she told the audience with a country twang, still donning the scene’s character and before 'fixing' to sing an old song, she said. 'I know I'm not as funny as Amy Schumer but I'm trying!' And after dramatically performing a blend of her ballads 'HeartBreakCity' and 'Love Don’t Live Here Anymore,' she happily skipped across a completely empty stage for a percussive and lighthearted 'Like a Virgin.' Read more When it comes to putting on a show, Madonna leaves no detail unnoticed. Rather than shoving a slew of titillating visuals onstage under endlessly flashing strobe lights and gimmicks, the seasoned entertainer presents thoroughly-developed stagings that are immersive, inherently vibrant and — when applicable — ethnically respectful. Each song includes its own quick transformation, mood and thematic variation, with the singer usually removing an article of clothing. Though some dialogue bits fell flat, lightning-length skits have her effortlessly slipping into vivid characters, each with a different voice and personality. And during wardrobe changes — a moment when other headliners leave it to video clips, onstage DJs or instrumental solos to simply hold over the crowd — Madonna's dancers served impressive spectacles that left the crowd gasping in awe, as they leaned wildly into the audience from atop ten-foot stilts. It's arguable that her changeover dance sequences and stunts are more entertaining than other performers' entire sets. The high caliber of arena show that Madonna delivers isn't a feat attainable by many. 'Finally, I made it to the top — thank you!' She said during a pause in 'Music.' 'You know what they say: it's lonely at the top, but it ain't crowded.' I won't pretend that I understood every word that was spoken in 'Diary of a Bad Lad,' a raw, intense film with lively performances and in your face camera work about a frustrated film maker named Barry Lick who sets out to make a documentary centered on a local businessman he believes to be involved in a variety of illegal transactions ranging from prostitution and property rackets to drugs and pornography. The businessman, whom Lick names Ray Topham to protect his identity, is surrounded by such associates as his local cocaine supplier and an S&M actress named Joanne Miller and his security associate, the gloriously evil Tommy Morghen. Rather quickly, everyone involved in the film quickly catches on that Lick is in over his head and set out to take advantage of his ignorance, often with both funny and tragic results. What happens in the end? You'll have to check it out for yourself. A product of the ever so slight no-budget filmmaking movement in Northern U.K., 'Diary of a Bad Lad' takes its low-budget and makes it work with a faux documentary style that is unnerving, unsettled yet hypnotic to watch. While there's no denying the film's modest production budget holds it back just a bit, more often than not director Michael Booth makes it work with fantastic results that are equally disturbing and unforgettable. Even as a bloody American film critic who couldn't quite grasp the meaning of every word spoken, I found myself hanging on every word of virtually every character in the film, a testimony to screenwriter Jonathan Williams' ability to create complex, multi-layered characters out of even his supporting characters. So, too, Booth gives each character ample screen time to bring their personalities to life and make us hate them or, well, hate them. There are films that you refer to as dark comedy, and then there are films that are pure, unabashed jet black comedy. 'Diary of a Bad Lad' is a jet black comedy, a no-holds-barred example of what we Americans might call guerilla film making that would be right at home in virtually any underground film festival in any part of the world. The film rests on the solid acting shoulders of Joe O'Byrne as Tommy Morghen, a man so deliciously evil that you'll want to invite him over to dinner but you'll make sure your weapon is fully loaded before you do. Similarly, screenwriter Jonathan Williams does double duty in portraying the film maker, Barry Lick, a man who is either completely and utterly clueless or he isn't. One is never completely sure. ![]() Beautifully lensed by Paul Gordon with stellar musical accompaniment by Simon Auster, 'Diary of a Bad Lad' is a prime example of the innovative, uniquely imagined films being brought to life in the vibrant world of independent film. In both versions, the song is sung. Atypically for an AC/DC song, it has a sad, slow blues, almost ballad-like feel to it. The lyrics concern a man reflecting on mistakes he has made in a relationship while drinking alcohol. It has frequently been cited as one of AC/DC's best songs. 'Ride On' was covered by the French band on their self-titled 1979 debut album, after supporting AC/DC in in the fall of 1978. Bon Scott jammed the song with Trust at Scorpio Sound Studios in on February 13, 1980, six days before his death. A recording of it would later surface on the Bon Scott Forever Volume 1 bootleg. AC/DC has played the song live only once, on June 22, 2001, at the, (near Paris), during the. At the end of that show, the band unexpectedly came back after their traditional two-songs encore, dressed as soccer players (with the blue color of the french soccer team), and played this song as a tribute to, who had died the day before, although it wasn't explicitly mentioned as such (earlier that evening, Brian Johnson had held a banner with the bluesman's name, probably given by someone in the public). In her first Western film, 1959’s The Horse Soldiers, Constance Towers found herself in the middle of two Johns: the masterful director John Ford (seated) and the most famous cowboy actor of all time, John Wayne (standing). – All The Horse Soldiers photos courtesy United artists – Lovely Constance Towers became a star when she played the female lead in two John Ford Westerns back-to-back: 1959’s The Horse Soldiers and 1960’s Sergeant Rutledge. What was Ford looking for in an actress? Towers tells True West: “Pappy had a way of looking at women: she was to be respected, kind of on a pedestal. But she had to have a lot of spunk and fire. She was feminine, but had a backbone and was always a lady.” The courtly Ford insisted that Towers be treated that way while filming. “No one ever used bad language around any women on any Pappy Ford set. We had tea in the afternoon, and it was all very gentlemanly. He treated you like a lady wants to be treated; but you had to have a sense of humor, because if you didn’t catch the subliminal things that went by you, it was a big disappointment to him.” In The Horse Soldiers, Towers played Southern belle Miss Hannah Hunter, whose home is occupied by Union troops under Col. John Marlowe (played by John “Duke” Wayne). Hunter does her best to sabotage the colonel’s plans, though she gradually becomes romantically drawn to him, and to his medical officer and nemesis, Maj. Henry Kendall (William Holden). “I was singing in the Persian Room of the Plaza Hotel [New York City] and [Producer] Martin Rackin saw me and invited me to Hollywood to meet Ford. The fact that I was Irish probably didn’t hurt. He screen-tested five of us; Gena Rowlands was one, and Joanna Moore. I had a call from an assistant to be at the Blessed Sacrament’s church Monday afternoon. I was to sit midway in a pew and wait. ![]() View HD Trailers and Videos for The Horse Soldiers on Rotten Tomatoes, then check our Tomatometer to find out what the Critics say. I sat, and someone behind me whispered in my ear, ‘You got the part.’ It was Ford, and he insisted on leaving and not talking to me, which was typical of him. It was always intrigue.” For three months, Ford filmed exterior scenes in Mississippi and Louisiana, with Towers starring opposite two of Hollywood’s most dynamic leading men, Wayne and Holden. “They were delightful to work with,” she says. “They took care of me.” She refutes claims that the two didn’t get along. “They even took an evening off. They cooked up a scheme [claiming that] in the dailies, Duke’s teeth looked discolored. He went into Shreveport with Bill, supposedly to have his teeth cleaned, and, of course, they had a night on the town. The next morning, we’re all waiting for them on location. Off in the distance, you saw this car driving in fast. They stopped, and John and Bill got out, looking like they hadn’t been to bed at all, and Pappy Ford had all the stuntmen lined up to smell their breath. “But they were very different personalities. John Wayne was as big, friendly, as open as he was on the screen; terrific with fans. He’d be riding all day and acting, come back mud-caked, and he’d stand and talk to young people. “ I heard one young man saying, ‘My dad won’t let me have the car on Saturday night.’ And Duke asked, ‘Well, when was the last time you offered to wash that car?’ The boy said, ‘I haven’t.’ Duke said, ‘Why don’t you? Maybe your dad will give it to you. Now I have another piece of advice. When is the last time you told your dad you loved him?’ The boy kind of put his head down. ‘Go home and try that. That’ll work, too.’ “Bill Holden was the opposite. He was very shy, and he believed strongly that the performance he was paid to put on the screen was all he owed the public. People would ask him for his autograph, and he’d refuse. He was the nicest, most polite gentleman, but he was just the opposite of Duke.” A fatal fall shocked the cast of The Horse Soldiers and none more so than Constance Towers. When she ran up to Fred Kennedy, who was doubling for William Holden, to embrace him with an “Oh, my darling,” she found the stuntman unconscious. He died on the way to the hospital. He appeared in seven films with John Wayne, who Kennedy stands next to, shirtless, in this still from Rio Grande. – Courtesy Republic Pictures – The shoot was enjoyable, but not easy. “Louisiana has swamps, and anything that happened on my horse, I had to do, except for one horse fall into the water. They had a stuntman do that,” she says. Ford appointed two men to look after her whenever she was on horseback. “Freddie Kennedy and Slim Hightower were wonderful old stuntmen. In the film, one’s ahead of me and one’s behind me, but we rode through a forest going what felt like 100 miles an hour through these trees. It was a tough location, but wonderful.” On the very last day on location, during the very last shot, an unexpected tragedy occurred. “Freddie was doing his last fall,” Towers says. “It was a simple shoulder fall, and Duke had told me to stand behind the camera and to run in. And they wouldn’t call ‘Cut’ until I had given Freddie a kiss on the cheek. I ran in, and when I picked up his head, I realized that he was mortally hurt. He’d fallen and broken his neck, so I really was the last person to hold him. He died on the way to the hospital, which certainly cast a pall on the closing shot of the location.” She loved the stuntmen and remembered especially how Ford looked after them: “Pappy didn’t pay them until their last weekend, so they would take money home. He gave them enough per diem to survive, but on location, there wasn’t much you could do with it, but gamble.” After nearly 50 years, Towers takes great pleasure in her memories: “You take it in stride, then later look back, and it’s just amazing. To be in my first big, big film, with those actors, and have it be just joyous all the time, and John Ford guiding everybody. It was a rare and wonderful experience.” Henry C. I purchased this album a few weeks ago at a Best Buy store. As soon as I got it home I put the records in anti-static sleeves. I finally listened to the entire album today and must say that I am very pleased with the sound quality. (My audio system consists of a U-Turn Orbit Custom turntable with the Grado Black1 cartridge and built-in pre-amp; a Sony STR-DH540 multi-channel receiver; Klipsch HD Theatre 600 speakers [surround sound system]). I did not wash my records before playing but did wipe them with a micro-fiber cloth sprayed with anti-static spray and used a carbon fiber brush to brush away surface dust, using a bright flashlight to really see the record surface to remove most all visible dust. As expected there were a few clicks during playing, but I believe those were from dust and not any defect in the pressing of the records. The discs were flat and not warped in any way. The sound to me was fantastic. All instruments sounded good and clear. No background noise was heard. Vocals sounded natural. I cannot compare this vinyl record to any other as I can't ever recall listening to it on vinyl in person. As I have read some people say, older pressings sound better but I really can't believe that because records will degrade with every play. So if you have a 1979 issue of this album I am sure it has been played many times and just does not have the sound of when it was new. I recommend this pressing for anyone interested in getting it. I am extremely pleased with mine. ![]() Documentary What price conscience? CREDIT: Courtesy of Tribeca Film Festival In the months that has been screening at film festivals and before faith groups, the unfortunate reality is that the frequency of mass shootings makes her project all the more urgent. The documentary, which opened in theaters this weekend, focuses on the debate over gun violence, with one of its central figures the Rev. Rob Schenck, an evangelical leader who struggles to reconcile his longtime pro-life position with the pro-gun rights position of the National Rifle Assn. While Disney tells Variety’s “PopPolitics” that she is “ashamed to say” that there will probably be one or more mass shootings in the next month, given the statistics, “we are at a point where we have to act.” She says that she is “incredibly optimistic” that the dynamics of the debate are changing, pointing to the fact that Democratic presidential candidates are trumpeting their low scores from the NRA, whereas in the past they would have tried to avoid the topic. But she also hopes that it helps provoke conversation that gets both sides out of their lockstep. She says that the movie “is an appeal to conscience, and every once in a while you can slice through a lot of resistance by just pinging someone at the center of their conscience.” Related Schenck, pictured above, stresses how he looks at the issue “theologically, morally and ethically,” as opposed to politically, whereas in the past he kind of “compartmentalized” his concerns with how the gun issue conflicted with his support for the sanctity of life. In the movie, he goes to an NRA convention to further discover what he sees is an alliance between the lobbying organization and religious conservatives. He also hopes that the language of the debate changes. The term “gun control,” he says, “is charged in my community with the fear of government overreach.” That feeling, he says, has its roots centuries ago, when religious communities were persecuted in Europe and, to an extent, in the United States. “That memory is very deep and it is in the DNA of evangelicals,” he says. “It is a genuine fear, a genuine emotion, but we have to get past that.” Listen below: ‘Our Brand Is Crisis’ and Today’s Spin Doctors, director of talks about whether the wizardry of political consultants is as effective today as it was in 2002. In the fictional version, Sandra Bullock plays the operative, “Calamity” Jane Bodine, but the movie still raises ethical questions about exporting American campaign tactics to other countries. Although the movie centers on Holbrooke’s career, highlighted by his successful negotiations in the 1990s to bring peace to the Balkans, it is a very personal story of a son discovering a father who was away so often in his life. Parents need to know that Batman: Bad Blood is a typical example of this superhero's modern-day direct-to-DVD adventures. Artful animated violence, accompanied by suspenseful, dynamic music, fills the screen for most of the story's 74-minute running time. One assorted team of Batman accomplices faces off against a motley gang of Gotham City's villains in a series of lengthy action set pieces that include: explosions, gun battles, physical fights to the death, heroes taken hostage, destruction of buildings, and, in this instance, torture. Characters are disguised, then revealed. Both heroes and villains appear to be dead, then are restored to life. Several references are made to Batwoman's (Kate Kane) sexuality; she meets a policewoman who may become a romantic interest in the future. Swearing includes 'bitch,' 'ass,' 'damn,' 'hell,' 'crap,' and 'pissed off,' sometimes uttered by the boy hero Robin. There's a bit of social drinking in the background, a revelation that Kate Kane had substance-abuse problems in the past, and one character shown sneaking a drink from a flask. The world is in danger yet again in BATMAN: BAD BLOOD. This time it's a consortium of players from Batman's enemy list: Talia al Ghul (), Jervis Tetch, Firefly, and the Heretic, a new boy in town, are eager for takeover. They've kidnapped Batman (); his trusted allies think he's dead; Gotham City is under siege. Nightwing (Sean Maher), Robin (), Batwing (), and Batwoman () join Alfred in a desperate effort to fight in Batman's stead. The team tries to retrieve technology that has been stolen from Wing Industries before it's used for evil purposes. Along the way, secrets are revealed, identities shift, and Batman is found alive, only to behave in a strange, unsettling way. The climactic sequence occurs at a technology summit hosted by Wayne Industries, in which dignitaries from all over the world look on in awe at the newest accomplishments. However, the summit is not what it seems. When the true villains are exposed, hand-to-hand combat and earth-shattering technical mayhem threatens them all. Quality animation, solid voice performances, and rousing music make this just right for ongoing fans of Batman original DVDs. As usual, the story is complex; the huge array of villains from days past is hard to keep straight. Who's working for whom? Who's using whose identity? Is Batman really Batman or is he Nightwing, or neither? Less Batman-savvy viewers may need to research the various backstories. But the action never stops in Gotham. The villains never give up, die anyway, and somehow manage to revive long enough to appear in a later tale. Parents should note that the tale is very violent but without blood, graphic injuries, or certain death. • Families can talk about how much of this film relies on previous knowledge of the heroes and villains. Do you think knowing who the characters are is essential to this story? Why, or why not? Where would you go to get details about these heroes and villains from Batman's long history? • Think about all the products, games, movies, and TV shows that are part of the Batman marketing universe. How does each contribute to the success of the franchise? How does each Batman product help sell another? • What is meant by the term 'diversity' in films and stories? In their effort to make Batman a more diverse brand, which characters and events did the filmmakers showcase in this story? |
